Rochdale is where the Pennine stone gives way to Manchester brick, and both are present in quantity. Central Rochdale, Castleton and Spotland are red brick terraces with arched heads. Out towards Littleborough, Milnrow and Wardle you are back into Victorian stone cottages. Norden and Bamford are nineteen thirties and post-war suburban, which means bays and set back front doors rather than pavement frontages. Ginnels and back alleys run through the older districts and affect access. Three conservation areas including Toad Lane remove permitted development rights.
