Working in Blackburn
Blackburn is brick, and that makes it the odd one out in East Lancashire. It sits on the coalfield rather than the gritstone, so the dense weaving terraces through Bastwell, Audley, Witton and Mill Hill are solid brick with no cavity, under slate, with brick arch heads and stone sills. That is a different job to a stone surround and anybody quoting it the same way has not looked properly. Stone appears at the fringes in Wilpshire and Pleckgate. Whole streets were cleared or rebuilt under the regeneration programmes, so what looks Victorian on a map sometimes is not.
