Working in Earby
Earby is three different places depending which street you are on. Around Colne Road and Victoria Road it is textbook 1890s gridiron mill terraces, regular and straightforward. Down in the old village core on Water Street it is a good deal older and less predictable. Up on Mill Brow the handloom weavers' cottages go back to the seventeen hundreds, with small informally placed openings and plain stone jambs that were never meant to take a modern frame without thought. The stone is buff rather than the grey you get further south, and some of the oldest roofs are still stone slate rather than Welsh.
