Working in Heywood
Heywood is the most ordinary of the towns we cover, and that is not a criticism. It is Victorian brick and stone terraces with substantial nineteen thirties and post-war estates behind them, which between them make up more of the housing here than in any East Lancashire town. Practically that means bay windows, set back front doors behind gardens, and cavity walls rather than solid, all of which make for a simpler and cheaper job than a stone terrace in Nelson. The conservation area is a small station and industrial area rather than a village core.
