Working in Haslingden
Haslingden is gritstone terraces on an exposed hillside, and the exposure is not a detail. South Pennine weather drives rain horizontally at these frontages, which tests pointing, seals and weathering in a way a sheltered valley does not, and it is worth specifying for rather than discovering. The conservation area was only designated in 2019 and takes in early weavers' cottages at Fallbarn Fold and the eighteenth century rows on Daisy Hill. A lot of the older centre came down in the sixties clearances, so the street pattern is patchier than it looks.
